I hear it all the time in my practice: people coming in who have done therapy before, but eventually walked away feeling a bit disheartened.
At first, it felt like such a relief to finally have a safe space to vent. But after a few months, it started to feel like they were just looping; talking about the past, childhood experiences, old relationships, and past trauma on repeat. They felt like their therapist was mostly just listening and reflecting back what they were saying, without offering concrete solutions, deep insights, or a sense of direction. And let us be honest: just venting week after week without moving anywhere can end up feeling utterly exhausting and unfulfilling.
On the flip side, we have probably all experienced coaching at some point. Coaching is naturally more future-focused. It is all about figuring out how to navigate your life to build the exact future you dream of. Whether that is launching a business, calling in a new relationship, or stepping into a bigger vision of yourself.
The Blind Spots of Keeping Them Separate
When we focus only on traditional therapy, we can get stuck in the heavy mud of our history. But when we focus only on coaching, we often run into a different kind of wall.
You might be working with someone who is entirely focused on future-facing mindset coaching. You are trying to build something new, but you keep hitting an invisible roadblock. You feel stuck, and you can sense that the enlightening liberation you are looking for actually requires some excavation from the past. You need to dig up what is underneath that block to truly move beyond it.
If your coach is so hyper-focused on the future that they miss the past, they might try to slap a positive mindset on a wound that actually needs deep healing. They miss the crucial step of excavating the old narrative so it stops dictating your future.
Where the Real Magic Happens
So, what is the actual difference?
Therapy tends to deal with the past. It helps us unpack trauma, childhood experiences, and old relational patterns.
Coaching tends to look toward the future. It helps us strategize, build momentum, and design the life we actually want.
The beauty, the real breakthrough, happens when we stop treating them as separate categories and truly knit the two together. The best practitioners and the most profound healing happen right at that intersection. You have to honour where you have been to sustainably create where you are going.
Example in Action: Bridging the Past and Future
Let me give you an example of how this looks in practice with a client we will call Laura.
Laura had spent a lifetime dating emotionally distant men who were unkind to her, spoke down to her, and failed to offer the commitment she craved. Initially, we looked at this through a coaching lens, examining her current mindset and dating habits. We discussed how she could shift her standards of self-worth so that she no longer made space in her life for unfulfilling or unloving dynamics.
But no matter how much we tried to coach and challenge her mindset, she hit an invisible wall. She simply could not overcome the deep-seated disbelief that she was worthy of kindness in her relationships.
Excavating the Past: Trauma-Informed Narrative Therapy and Parts Work
Recognizing that mindset shifts alone weren’t working, we shifted into a trauma-informed therapeutic approach to explore why she believed poor treatment was acceptable.
It turned out Laura’s father had left the family when she was just six years old, followed by a succession of boyfriends through her childhood, some kind, but others dismissive and unkind. As adults, we can logically understand that her father leaving had nothing to do with her. But to a six-year-old trying to make sense of a confusing world, children naturally internalize these events through a limited vantage point. Using narrative therapy, we uncovered the story she had written: My father left because I wasn’t worthy of him staying.
Because of this early narrative, Laura normalized dismissive treatment and unconsciously began to accept it as her baseline. On a conscious level, she didn’t think about her childhood while dating. However, drawing on parts theory, we began to understand that a younger part of her psyche, her inner child, was surfacing during dates, leading her to accept poor treatment or slip into performative behaviours to earn affection.
Bringing Insight into the Present: The Coaching Integration
So, once we uncovered that root, how did we use it to move forward? This is where we seamlessly leaned back into a coaching framework, armed with deep self-awareness.
Now, when Laura goes on a date, she has the tools to notice in real-time when she is placing someone else on a pedestal and lowering her own worth. Through our work together, she learned to recognize the physical and behavioral cues of that inner child showing up: her shoulders dropping, the pitch of her voice shifting, and her behavior turning performative as she chased approval.
Instead of trying to forcefully silence or override that part of herself, Laura can now use her adult self to pause, recognize what is happening, and nurture that inner child, giving her the love and validation she always deserved.
By combining the excavation of the past with actionable awareness in the present, we do not just talk about history. We put those insights to work to completely transform her future.
The Path Forward
Growth is never about choosing between looking backward and looking forward. If you have spent years feeling like you have to pick between healing your past in therapy or driving toward your future in coaching, it is time to let that exhausting binary go.
True transformation happens when we have the courage to unpack our history so we can finally step into our present with clarity and power. You do not have to keep choosing between a safe space to process and a strategic plan to grow. You deserve an approach that honours the tender parts of your story while giving you the momentum to build the life you actually want.
If you are ready to stop fighting your own invisible walls, heal the root of the pattern, and start creating lasting change, I would love to support you.
